Some children have plenty of ideas but struggle to get those ideas onto paper. They may know what they want to say but have difficulty forming complete sentences, choosing precise words, organizing their thoughts, or developing a clear paragraph.​

At Point Speech Pathology & Literacy Lab, we provide specialized writing support for children who struggle with written expression. Rather than focusing only on the finished assignment, we look at the language skills that make writing possible.

 

What we address:

• Sentence formulation: building complete, varied, and increasingly complex sentences

• Grammar and syntax: using word order, sentence structure, and grammatical forms accurately

• Elaboration: adding meaningful details, explanations, descriptions, and supporting information

• Organization: planning and sequencing ideas so writing is clear and cohesive

• Paragraph structure: developing topic sentences, supporting details, and conclusions

• Narrative writing: writing organized stories with characters, settings, problems, events, and resolutions

• Expository writing: explaining, describing, comparing, and presenting information clearly

• Planning and revision: learning to plan ideas, review writing, and revise for clarity and completeness

 

This is more than simply helping a child complete a writing assignment. Written expression depends on a complex network of language skills, and children who struggle with writing may need support with the language architecture underneath the page.

If your child has good ideas but struggles to write them down, writes very short or disorganized responses, has difficulty writing a paragraph, or finds it challenging to explain ideas clearly in writing, a language-based approach to writing support may be appropriate.
